The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation offers support exclusively to organizations that are registered as tax-exempt under IRS code 501(c)(3) and have a public charity status of either 509(a)(1) or 509(a)(2). To qualify, these organizations must serve residents within the District of Columbia, Prince George’s or Montgomery counties in Maryland, Arlington or Fairfax counties, or the cities of Alexandria or Falls Church in Virginia.

Operational History

Organizations must have been in continuous operation for at least one (1) year before they are eligible to apply for funding.

Organizational Capacity

Organizations must:

• have a minimum of three (3) active governing board members.
• demonstrate a minimum annual revenue of $100,000 during their most recently completed fiscal year.
• provide ongoing programs or services on a regular basis.

Application Frequency

Eligible organizations may submit only one application within a 12-month period. For example, if an application is submitted for the November 1 deadline, the organization must wait until the subsequent November 1 deadline before submitting another application, regardless of the outcome of the previous request.

National and Statewide Organizations

National and statewide organizations seeking support for work serving residents in the Foundation’s geographic area must also have been operating within that area for at least one year to qualify for funding consideration. These organizations must complete the project support application.

Special Applicant Requirements

Certain types of organizations, including churches, schools, hospitals, colleges, and universities, are expected to seek support for specific projects or programs rather than unrestricted general operating support. These organizations must complete the project support application.

Funding Exclusions

The Foundation does not provide funding for the following types of organizations and purposes:

• Organizations that do not have 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status with the IRS or a formal fiscal sponsor
• Private foundations
• Public charities with a non-private foundation status of 509(a)(3)
• Organizations that do not primarily serve residents within the specified geographic area, including the District of Columbia, Prince George’s and Montgomery counties in Maryland, Arlington or Fairfax counties, and the cities of Alexandria and Falls Church in Virginia
• Individuals
• Independent or private schools
• Organizations whose programs or activities are primarily religious in nature or intended to advance a particular faith tradition
• Endowments
• Stand-alone scholarships or fellowship programs
• One-time artistic projects
• Special events
• Participation in or travel to conferences or special events
